William Sons is a locally owned and operated general contracting and construction company. We provide a variety of services including design-builds, commercial construction, renovations, structural upgrading, hydro-vac, horizontal directional drilling, utilities excavating, property maintenance, landscaping, and fencing. We have more than 30 years of experience in the construction industry.
William Sons is recruiting for a Directional Driller. This is a full-time position working Monday-Friday.
You will be responsible for executing complex bores for utilities with high accuracy. The Directional Driller will support the lead civil construction supervisor in the execution of daily tasks while maintaining a rigorous commitment to site safety and organization.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Safely set up and operate HDD rigs (e.g., Vermeer, Ditch Witch) to perform bores of varying lengths and diameters.
- Complete Field-Level Hazard Assessment (FLHA) to identify existing and/or potential hazards prior to operating on work sites. (i.e cross-bores, soil instability, or overhead obstructions.)
- Work closely with the locator-tracker to follow the predetermined bore path, making real-time adjustments for pitch and depth.
- Monitor and adjust drilling mud and bentonite mixtures based on soil conditions.
- Ensure the workspace is restored to its original condition and all bore logs are accurately documented.
- Troubleshoot any equipment issues and relay to service technicians for assistance or resolution.
- Operate the directional drill using the selected bore heads and back reamers to place cables and/or duct.
- Perform daily maintenance and equipment inspections to be documented and reported to the supervisor.

- 3-5 years of experience as a directional driller is preferred
- Ability to consistently lift, carry, and maneuver materials up to 50 lbs.
- Capacity to work in high-demand environments, including extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain, while wearing full PPE (i.e., hard hat, steel toes, fall arrest harness)
- Ability to identify and interpret Ontario One Call locates with 100% accuracy and communicate areas that require additional location
- Expert knowledge of utility locating and the daylighting process to verify existing lines
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving abstract
- AR or AZ license is an asset
- Proficient with CVOR and Book 7 requirements
- Ability to operate an excavator, backhoe, etc., and help out the ground crew as needed
