The Algonquins of Ontario (AOO) are on a journey of survival, rebuilding, and self-sufficiency – a journey of reconciliation. This journey began nearly 250 years ago when the first Algonquin Petition was submitted to the Crown in 1772. Today, the AOO comprises the 10 Algonquin communities.

We are recruiting for a Cultural Heritage Advisor. This is a one-year contract position with the possibility of an extension. The hours of work are 35 per week, Monday to Thursday (8:30am-4:30pm) and Friday (8:30am-2:00pm).

The Cultural Heritage Advisor is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of cultural and heritage programs, activities, and priorities of the AOO. The Cultural Heritage Advisor provides a wide range of strategic and operational services to develop the capacity to support the inventory, stewardship, and conservation of these heritage resources.

Overview of Responsibilities:

  • Establish and coordinate administrative processes and procedures, prepare technical reviews, and provide advice and recommendations to support cultural heritage projects and elements
  • Maintain archaeological project files
  • Coordinate and manage the AOO archaeological liaison program and the AOO archaeological assessment review process
  • Participate in cultural heritage negotiations and final treaty chapter development
  • Coordinate special projects, training sessions, community consultations, and events related to heritage and culture
  • Develop proposals for funding
  • Work collaboratively with agencies, private sector proponents, public stakeholder groups etc.
Qualifications
  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree in anthropology, history or a related discipline
  • 6-10 years of experience
  • Strong ability in implementing strategic plans, policies, and procedures
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to foster unity and trust and establish cooperative working relationships with others
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to lead group discussions
  • Strong meeting management abilities
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Able to work independently and within a team environment
  • Valid class G driver’s license
  • Have or be willing to acquire standard First Aid and CPR certification
