The Algonquins of Ontario (AOO) are on a journey of survival, rebuilding, and self-sufficiency – a journey of reconciliation. This journey began nearly 250 years ago when the first Algonquin Petition was submitted to the Crown in 1772. Today, the AOO comprises the 10 Algonquin communities.

We are recruiting for a Lands and Resources Management Advisor. This is a one-year contract position with the possibility of an extension. The hours of work are 35 per week, Monday to Thursday (8:30am-4:30pm) and Friday (8:30am-2:00pm).

This position coordinates and provides technical expertise in the review and timely response to consultation requests in land matters related to proposed government land dispositions, environmental assessment reviews, resource management matters, official plan reviews, and major infrastructure initiatives as per the Consultation Process Interim Measurements Agreement.

Overview of Responsibilities:

  • Provide lead oversight for assigned Algonquins of Ontario working groups and negotiation sub-tables
  • Develop and maintain a database for all proposed land selections, potential federal surplus land selections, and future private land acquisitions
  • Maintain an electronic filing system for reports, plans, legal agreements and other documents
  • Utilize geographic information systems (GIS) for land use planning
  • Assist in consultations and/or negotiations and develop presentation materials
  • Serve as a liaison between Algonquin communities and various government ministries and department consultation requests and AOO land selections
  • Coordinate field reviews, site visits, and consultant studies and surveys relating to the consultation requests and AOO land selections
  • Assist in pre-planning of selected provincial Crown land properties identified for potential near-term (1 to 5 year) economic development
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environmental science, natural resources, forestry, geography, planning or a related discipline
  • 6-10 years of previous experience
  • Ability to give professional advice and direction
  • Strong ability to demonstrate a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with others
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures governing land use planning, resource management, and environmental assessments
  • Critical thinking and project management skills
  • Advanced skills with ArcGIS, online GIS applications, mobile GIS and GeoWarehouse or Teranet Advanced skills with the Microsoft Office
  • Valid class G driver’s license
  • Clear criminal record check
