The Algonquins of Ontario (AOO) are on a journey of survival, rebuilding, and self-sufficiency – a journey of reconciliation. This journey began nearly 250 years ago when the first Algonquin Petition was submitted to the Crown in 1772. Today, the AOO comprises the 10 Algonquin communities.
We are recruiting for a Fisheries and Wildlife Advisor. This is a one-year contract position with the possibility of an extension. The hours of work are 35 per week, Monday to Thursday (8:30am-4:30pm) and Friday (8:30am-2:00pm).
This position provides fisheries and wildlife management expertise to uphold Algonquin rights in the development, implementation and review of natural resources policies, programs, guidelines and legislation. The Fisheries and Wildlife Advisor assesses and reports on the impacts of existing and proposed government legislation, regulations, procedures and operations related to AOO rights and interests.
Overview of Responsibilities:
- Coordinate the delivery of wildlife management initiatives and programs across unceded AOO settlement areas
- Lead and participate in regional wildlife management programs, advisory committees, planning teams and other groups
- Assemble and analyze literature and scientific reports to recommend courses of action
- Provide advice for species at risk permits, wildlife crossing design, and mitigation strategies
- Provide biological and resource management leadership
- Support the development of wildlife monitoring programs
| |
- Master’s or bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science or a related discipline
- 6-10 years of experience
- Working knowledge of current government strategic directions, existing federal and provincial resource management policies and applicable resource legislation
- Working knowledge of direction within the legislation that affects Algonquin rights, and other Indigenous people’s rights
- Proven technical fisheries and wildlife field research skills and abilities
- Strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lead group discussions and meetings
- Strong meeting management abilities
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office
- Valid class G driver’s license
- Skills, experience, and certifications associated with health and safety, safe use of off-road vehicles, and data collection while conducting fieldwork would be assets
