Riverview Heights Retirement Residence is an independent living seniors' residence which opened in 2008. We provide a home-like setting with an open and friendly culture that allows residents and families to feel valued, safe and secure. Riverview Heights encourages independence while providing residents and their families the comfort of knowing our caring staff is there to help if needed.

Riverview Heights is currently recruiting for a Cook. This is a casual position.

The Cook is a key member of the dietary team. The position involves active preparation and cooking of meals and snacks as well as cleaning and maintaining sanitation standards in the kitchen. In the absence of the Dietary Services Manager, the Cook serves as team leader and directs the activities of the servers based on established standards.  

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and offer a variety of foods to enhance the daily lives of the residents
  • Work within set budgets, limit waste and adhere to facility and departmental policies and procedures
  • Review regular and therapeutic menus with the Dietary Services Manager
  • Set-up equipment and supplies for daily food preparation
  • Prepare food following standardized recipes
  • Ensure meals are attractively served on time, at appropriate temperatures and in portion-controlled quantities
  • Monitor the quality of food supplies received and the proper operation of kitchen equipment
  • Maintain required records (menu changes, purchase orders, delivery receipts and temperature checks)
  • Responsible for maintaining cleanliness in all work areas
  • Responsible for the clear and correct labelling of excess food and safe disposal
  • Perform duties as outlined and any other duties that may be assigned from time to time
Qualifications
  • Red Seal certification, completion of a recognized food services course, or combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Customer service experience with a resident-first attitude
  • Knowledge and experience in quantity food preparation
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and stand and walk short distances throughout the shift
  • Ability to tolerate heat from the kitchen area
  • Ability to understand oral and written directions
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS and occupational health and safety
  • Excellent attendance is essential
  • Previous experience working with seniors or vulnerable sector people who are declining with age-related health conditions is an asset
