The Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) is a 55-bed, fully accredited facility located 45 minutes west of Ottawa, serving a catchment area of over 60,000.  Part of the Renfrew and Area Health Village, RVH provides medical, surgical and complex continuing care as well as extensive ambulatory care with over 30,000 emergency and clinic visits per year.

As a result of an upcoming maternity leave at RVH, we are hiring a temporary full-time Registered Nurse for our Regional Assault Care Program (RCAP). This role involves providing availability for days, evenings, nights, two weekends per month and statutory holidays.

About This Role

As part of a mobile on-call nursing team, the Registered Nurse provide acute, follow-up and outpatient health and forensic care to women, men and children who are victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, elder abuse and child maltreatment. Care is provided in all five hospitals in Renfrew County. This role also provides home assessments with older adults and involves liaising with community partners to develop and deliver public education on abuse prevention and RACP services.

Duties include:

  • Provide emergency, follow-up and community case management client care.
  • Provide on-call availability per month for emergency client care.
  • Assess the physical, mental and emotional status of clients, their coping strategies, support systems, resources, etc.
  • Provide appropriate information and referrals.
  • Provide emotional support, reassurance, validation, and crisis counselling.
  • Complete risk assessments and safety planning.
  • Understand and explain options of care, while respecting the client’s right to self-determination.
  • Collect and/or assist the emergency room physician with the collection of forensic specimens and ensure continuity of evidence.
  • Ensure a safe environment for client care.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate documentation.
  • Restore the treatment room after use and replace any used equipment and/or supplies.
Qualifications
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Experience and understanding of issues related to sexual assault, domestic violence, elder abuse, child maltreatment and crisis intervention
  • Excellent physical assessment skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Experience teaching and developing public education materials
  • Computer skills
  • Commitment to work cooperatively within a team environment
  • Self-directed and able to respond to a call for service and attend in the emergency department of the RVH and Pembroke Regional Hospital within 60 minutes
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel throughout Renfrew County

Assets:

  • Sexual assault nurse examiner training with the Ontario Network of Sexual Assault-Domestic Violence Treatment Centres
  • SANE(A) certification with the International Association of Forensic Nurses i
  • Pediatric sexual abuse training
  • Geriatric assessment training
  • Risk assessment training (ODARA, danger assessment, EARA)
  • A minimum of three to five years of nursing experience in forensic nursing, mental health, community, public health or acute care
  • Bilingualism
